Due to the Estates rich mining heritage and the historical production of blue Ball Clay for distribution around the world, the land has a complex topography making it unsuitable for farming but consequently perfect for nature. In acknowledgement of its uniqueness, the Estate was Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1985 well before environmental issues became popular concern.
