Projects

The Furzebrook Estate historically associated with the clay industry was reinvented as a destination for tourism, opening The Blue Pool Tearooms in 1935. The transition from industrial to tourism and now sustainable tourism has been a long and winding road. Economic and political challenges have been met over the decades, not least playing its role during World War II.

Today the Furzebrook Estate addresses very different but equally important battles, the environment being of major worldwide concern. Aware that the only certainty for the future is ‘change’ we seek to secure the countryside and its environment whilst maintain the historical integrity of the site for future generations. All these considerations are at the forefront of our minds when making decisions and commencing new projects. Ensuring sustainable tourism and financial security are of paramount importance to ensure the Estate is not lost to future generations, but remains enjoyed for generations to come. We believe our visitors and members are more likely to engage with us if they are able to draw an affinity with our aspirations and share in our same vision for the future.

Many of our projects are now associated with conservation and land management, seeking to ‘protect out natural world, providing a safe place for nature to thrive’ however we must keep our eyes on the future viability of the Estate and therefore propose the following exciting projects…

Furzebrook Garden Centre - Established 1800

Operational until as recently as the 1980’s Furzebrook Garden Centre was famous for its wonderful selection of exotic species including rare and beautiful Azaleas.

Five Victorian greenhouses occupy a walled garden within the Estate, hidden form the public for nearly half a century, these beautiful buildings will undergo a process of refurbishment and renovation. Our ambition is to open them for the public to enjoy once again. Our goal is 2025 – 2026 – Enjoy a cream tea on the lawn whilst soaking up the historical charm of this secret garden. Further details coming soon…

Eco Boiler - installed 2023

The Blue Pool & Furzebrook Estate commissioned and installed an Eco Boiler! ‘A fabulous piece of kit’ which significantly reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. The boiler supplies heating and hot water across the Estate and runs purely on timber which has been felled in accordance with out Countryside Stewardship scheme, this boiler really is a ‘win win’, good for the planet and great for keeping our fingers and toes warm during the cold winter months.

Solar / Photovoltaic

Plans are afoot, we hope to install photovoltaic panels at The Blue Pool in 2025 further reducing our dependants on fossil fuels… a significant step towards carbon naturality.
